Is that discount actually good?

A percentage-off badge can make almost anything look like a bargain. A useful deal is one that holds up after you check the real total, the seller, and whether you needed the item in the first place.

1. Start with the price, not the percentage

“40% off” sounds impressive, but the comparison price may not reflect what shoppers usually pay. Search the exact model number, capacity, color, and condition across other reputable sellers. A slightly smaller discount on the right model can beat a huge discount on a weaker or older version.

If a price history is available from a reputable tracker, look for the range over time. Avoid comparing a new product with refurbished, open-box, or bundled listings as if they were identical.

2. Calculate the delivered total

The advertised item price is only one piece. Add shipping, mandatory handling charges, taxes where applicable, and any required accessories. Check whether a promotional price requires a membership, subscription, minimum basket, or special payment method.

A quick example: A $60 item with $15 shipping is not cheaper than the same $68 item with free shipping, assuming the same condition and seller protections. The real comparison is $75 versus $68 before applicable taxes.

3. Check who is actually selling it

A recognizable marketplace does not necessarily mean the marketplace itself is the seller. Read the seller name, fulfillment method, recent feedback, return instructions, and warranty terms. For higher-value electronics, confirm whether the manufacturer warranty applies to that seller and your region.

4. Understand the return window

A good price becomes less attractive if returns are expensive or difficult. Look for restocking fees, return-shipping responsibility, exceptions for opened products, and whether the listing is final sale. Save the order confirmation and a screenshot of material terms in case the listing changes.

5. Ask the most important question

Would I still want this at its regular, realistic selling price? If not, the discount may be creating urgency rather than value. Put it on a list, compare alternatives, and revisit the decision after a short pause.
